Autism Friendly

“If only other people understood…”

Have you ever been to a restaurant, hairdressers, shop, leisure centre or anywhere in fact and wished they were more aware of autism?

Sometimes it’s not an issue. Other times when you are having a challenging moment, or just anticipating a meltdown, you just wish someone would understand and hurry up with their meal or stop the alarm bell ringing or turn off the flashing lights or simply just help you instead of standing around tutting!

The Autism Directory is launching its own ‘Parent Approval’ and ‘Autism Friendly’ marks for businesses and places that as parents we would recommend, and for other autism families to know about.

“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible”

- The Dalai Lama

The ‘Parent Approval’ mark will be attributed to entries on the directory that parents have experienced and recommended as being helpful and aware of the needs of autistic children and adults.

These businsesses will then be offered autism awareness training and if they want this they will also get our ‘Autism Friendly’ mark once completed and tested by parents. Both these marks will clearly identify those entries on the directory that we recommend to other autism families, so they can use them with a degree of confidence that they will understand their needs. Of course, we rely on you to let us know if this isn’t the case and if you have doubts over their autism friendliness then please tell us about it.

The ‘autism friendly’ directory will grow as more and more parents tell us about the businesses and places they recommend.

  • So please let us know who do you feel deserves a mention?
  • How about the hairdressers that are so good with your child?
  • A local restaurant, the dentist, a coffee shop or retail outlet?
  • Please take a moment to tell us about the autism friendly places that are in your local area?
