Recreation

“Want a holiday or just some fun and time out?”

Does the thought of going on holiday fill you with excitement or dread? Out of normal routine in unfamiliar places that are not able to cater for their limited diet, cannot guarantee being escape-proof and don’t understand that we don’t do queues!

And that’s what you have to look forward to after the journey there, which is often chosen because there is no flying and limited time in the car.

Many holiday places that cater for children do not have any idea of what that type of environment could mean to a child with autism, and so very often families decide to stay safe at home rather than have to deal with the challenge that a holiday could be.

However, there are more and more holiday places that cater for children with special needs either exclusively or intergrated with other holiday makers. Of course, the extent to which you want your needs to be catered for will vary, and as more holiday companies get onboard with this, the more choice there will be.

Then closer to home what is there around for every day recreation? Not just at holiday time, but during the year what clubs and activities are there around where you can go and be assured that your child will be safe, will be cared for and will have fun?

“So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings, forever, in Never Never Land!”

- Peter Pan

Sometimes it’s just the small things that can help turn a nightmare of a day into a wonderful memory, and all it often takes for that to happen is a little understanding and awareness of autism. For example, most theme parks in the UK will provide your child and a carer with ‘exit passess’ for the rides so that you don’t have to queue. A small gesture, but a huge help – just check with them beforehand what you need to take to show them.

On the subject of theme parks, Merlin’s Magic Wand is a worldwide charity for children, aiming to provide magical experiences for those who are seriously ill, disabled or disadvantaged. You can apply for free tickets to any of Merlin’s attractions and help towards travel costs too. These include Legoland, Madame Tussauds, Alton Towes, SeaLife and many more…

The directory of places to go on holiday and for all the year round recreation will grow as more and more parents tell us about the places they recommend.

So please let us know who do you feel deserves a mention?

How about the leisure centre or swimming pool that are so good with your child? An activity centre, local football team, play ground, kids club or anything else that your child enjoys.

Please take a moment to tell us about the recreational places that are in your local area?
